With Candy Canes and Silver Lanes Aglow – Enjoy Christmas at Christianson’s

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas Everywhere you go  Whether decor or plants or books or treats Here’s a holiday hangout you should know

Christmas in the Northwest

As autumn marches on and begins to wane like the yellows and oranges of the maples, the build-up to Christmas takes on an entire season of its own. One of my favorite aspects of this season of anticipation is all the Christmas markets, festive locations and community events. Of the locations in the North Puget Sound region, one of the hidden gems is Christianson’s Nursery & Greenhouse in the scenic Skagit Valley.

Operating for over 30 years on an expanse of farmland near La Conner, Christianson’s is not only a regional go-to for plants of all varieties, from mainstream to uncommon, but also provides a great selection of garden accessories and gifts for all seasons. But after the blooms of summer fade and our gardens get tucked away for a long winter’s nap is when Christianson’s comes to a new festive life. Once the clock strikes midnight November 1, the nursery and buildings are transformed into a winter wonderland of gifts and novelties for all ages.

Gifting Game Level: Expert

Enter Primrose Antiques & Gifts, and you’ll find the greatest treasures for everyone on your list. The decorator in your life will love the unique stockings and garlands, while Grandma will appreciate the vintage ornaments. Got a baker or a flower lover on your list? Check out the wall of books for offerings from both local and national authors and experts. Christmas night, the children will be nestled all snug in their beds, while visions of puzzles or a Frog & Toad book dance in their heads. And don’t forget about Dad; tasty popcorn varieties and bar gifts will be sure to fit his list. As long as someone doesn’t want a hippopotamus for Christmas, Primrose is sure to do the trick.

The Prettiest Sight to See

Steps away, those with a green thumb will enter their own version of Santa’s workshop, browsing an entire wall of bulbs and seeds in the Garden Store. Continue on into the Conservatory for indoor plants perfect for any season, but especially holly and ivy and poinsettias and Christmas cactus with the best yuletide color.

Locals Only

Outside and across the nursery grounds stands The Vinery, a 1940s building now used for events. During the Christmas season, you’ll find a great schedule of festive events. The Valley Made Holiday Market during the weekends of November 17-19 and December 8-10 and the Skagit Valley Farmer’s Market on December 17 feature dozens of local artisans, growers and producers with great gifts and meal staples. Sample the Nettle Gouda or pure Greek Yogurt from Samish Bay Cheese, pick up a new dried flower wreath from Goose Creek Flowers, or snag a hand-stitched Harry Potter or potted succulent from Yarntender. Find more information and a vendor list here.

Season’s Greetings

Finally, the nursery itself provides a beautiful setting to wander or snap a couple photos for your Christmas card. Seasonal favorites such as camellias provide bursts of pink and red, while various conifers glow gold and green. Seek out a stone bench, a moon gate of lights or an ivy-covered wall for a shot that can grace your family photo wall for years to come. Professional photographers can find more information and some rules to follow here.
